WEEK 11: 2D Digital Art 1 - Assignment 4: Due at the end of class today!
Today we'll wrap up our sprite assignment and hand it in.
We'll focus on creating the enemies, vehicles, obstacles, and power ups, and adding any final details you need to complete your sprite sheet. There is a scanner in the peer tutor lab if you need to bring in any hand-drawn artwork. Don't forget to pack all your art neatly into folders and include all your layers. Double-check the hand-in parameters for naming conventions and file sizes.

WEEK 10: 2D Digital Art 1 - Assignment 4: Sprites! - Run Animation
Next, we'll start placing our jointed character into our template to make the animation cycles.
If you're really fast and get through making your cycles I'll show you how you can save out your cycles as animated Gifs.
We'll also discuss power-ups and how to use layer effects to create glows and add animation.
Next class bring your work in progress and any enemies, obstacles, and vehicles. We'll assemble everything in class. Your project is due at the end of next week's class.

WEEK 8: 2D Digital Art 1 - Sidescroller Level Design, Wrapping up Assignment 3
Picking up where we left off last week, we'll continue with level design
adding a mid-ground layer, elements like platforms and door frames, and
apply techniques such as shadows and filters to dress up the art style.
We'll discuss more esoteric concepts like continuity and atmosphere, create repeating elements and build depth by placing panning objects in the foreground and mid-ground.
This assignment is now due at the start of NEXT WEEK's CLASS to give you time to work on it outside of class.
Please check your file naming conventions. Remember to CROP your image down to just your artwork - 600 Pixels high - 2000 Pixels wide - can be longer if you like.
Remember to RASTERIZE your reference image files.
Here's a simple example of how your BG could move in parallax to show perspective in a game environment.

WEEK 5: 2D Digital Art 1 - Comic Book Art in Photoshop, continued -- Adding the Final Colour Effects
Pencils: Greg Capullo Inks: Jonathan Glapion Colours: FCO |
Now it's time to finalize our image by adding colour to mold the 3D look of the characters. We'll continue using the special brushes we created last week and add a bunch of new tools and techniques such as layer styles or blend modes, gradients, highlights and shadows, and blur effects. These are great pro tricks to make your artwork look really slick and get used to the amazing power of Photoshop.
This assignment is due today in class!
Remember, late projects are only allowed with advance permission and subject to late penalties.

We'll learn how to make the most of Photoshop's many brush presets and settings to create custom brushes to make ink splatters, textured shading effects and other details that make the piece look dynamic and painterly.
Click here for some excellent tutorials on Digital Tutors about creating and using custom brush effects in Photoshop.
If you're not a DT customer, there are lots of tutorials on the web such as this one: Creating a custom brush in PS

WEEK 2: 2D Digital Art 1 - Comic Book Art in Photoshop
Welcome to Digital Art 1!
Because this course falls on many holiday Mondays, we're starting right in with Assignment 2 - Comic Book Art using Adobe Photoshop.
You will learn many tools that will help you create an amazing piece of artwork. We'll ink and colour some penciled comic-book art.
